Introduction

LLRFPreAmp is a preamplifier responsible for the first stage amplification of the LLRF system control output.

General description

LLRFPreAmp is a two-channel RF amplifier with 30dB gain at 500MHz, up to 2W output power per channel driven by two Low Noise Amplifiers (LNAs) from Mini-circuits, protected by a circulator to avoid damage by reflected power from the output port. Input (forward power) and output (forward and reverse power) monitoring ports are provided in the Front Panel through SMA connectors. It requires a +24V DC power supply. In addition to the original heatsink, a cooler was included in each LNA to lower the temperature close to room temperature to guarantee that it will work in the linear power output range. The simplified diagram with the main components and ports is shown in Fig. 1.

Versions V1I1 and V2I1 include a coaxial switch that provides an extra actuation of the RF output signal controlled by (normally open) relays from the equipment protection system (EPS) that has a typical switching speed of 20ms. Version V2I2 removed the coaxial switch since it is available close to the second stage amplifier input.
